From april at earth.sinica.edu.tw Mon Jun 16 00:19:05 2008 From: april at earth.sinica.edu.tw (Li-Mei Chen) Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2008 22:19:05 +0800 Subject: [Mailman] join MAMS Testbed Federation Message-ID: <20080615135301.M96835@earth.sinica.edu.tw> Dear Mailman: I am a senior librarian from the Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica (http://www.sinica.edu.tw/main_e.shtml.) We have a very small pilot project titled "Federated access management for electronic resources: the feasibility of applying Shibboleth in the education and research community in Taiwan" funded by the National Science Council, Taiwan. We are trying to set up the IdP and select some Shibboleth participating publishers like Elsevier and Thomson ISI to see how Shibboleth is operated between the libraries and publishers. The purpose of the study is to raise people's attention on the importance of e-resource security and user privacy in Taiwan. We have almost set up the IdP in our library IP: 140.109.80.153 and the problem now we encounter is that we have to create a vitual federation or join a federation. I have contacted Mr. Nate Klingenstein from the Internet2 and Mr. Vries, Ale de, Elsevier Product Manager and they gave me some suggestions and advices. Elsevier will let us test their resource (see e-mail below) but we have to join a federation first. We would like to temporary join MAMS Testbed Federation to test Shibboleth. Would you let me know it is possible to do that and what kind of documents we need to prepare? Thank you very much for your attention and help. Dear Li-Mei, There used to be an international test federation - InQueue - but that was deactivated some time ago. It might be possible for you to become a temporary member of one of the established national federations that we work with; these national federations are primarily meant for universities in those countries - but maybe not exclusively, and you might want to ask them for advise on this. Two federations we already work with are the UK Federation (http://www.ukfederation.org/) and InCommon in the USA (www.incommonfederation.org). Arguably a bit closer to home is the Australian federation (http://www.federation.org.au/FedManager/jsp/index.jsp), but we have not established any integration with them yet (although we would like to at some point). Mainland China also has a federation in the making (http://shibboleth.edu.cn/), but I do not know if that would be a suitable option given the political situation between your two countries. Let me know if I can help further with this. From what I understand your meaning is that I have to either establish a virtualfederation or join a federation. Do you have any suggestion for which federation to be joined? ... "[W]e do need an entity that at least deploys signed site metadata, and with whom we co-ordinate the use of certificates and agree on attributes to be used." Do you have any suggestion about how to start then I can join your Elsevier's Shibboleth test? Any suggestions would be great! We are willing to assist our customers in running tests with Shibboleth software, but for that, at least some sort of federation needs to be established first. This could be a simple virtual federation at your end with only your library as an Identity Provider - but we do need an entity that at least deploys signed site metadata, and with whom we co-ordinate the use of certificates and agree on attributes to be used. If such a test federation, however small, does not yet exist for use to work with, I am afraid that we cannot be of much assistance to you.
